Flashback! Rewind! No, it’s not time for Gina G’s ill fated attempt to hit the Eurovision 2005 stage, we’re taking about the 2010 Eurovision song contest preselection season! In so many countries, elaborate song selections entertain us all, but leave us all a little heartbroken that our favourites will never see the light of the Eurovision stage, so today I’m here to talk about what could have been for Denmark.

On February 6th, Denmark switched on to watch it’s national final, using a similar format as last year, ten songs, of which the top four would be selected by televoting and juries, and then battle each other individually, tournament style until only one remains. Simple enough eh? I found this year’s Danish national final both exciting and disappointing, with exactly half of the entries being fond favourites and the other five songs I’ve struggled to listen to a second time and since my grandma told me if I can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all, I shall focus only on the ‘good’ half.

For the second year in a row, pop-tastic but vocally questionable female trio Sukkerchok made an appearance in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, this time singing Kæmper for Kærlighed. Dressed in military-esque garb, they certainly put on a much more impressive show than they did with Det’ Det in 2009 but it was not enough to get them to the top four, on the other hand vaguely scary looking Kaya Brüel’s mid tempo entry Only Tonight was very impressive vocally, but her gimmick of being raised slowly in the air while a man dressed in white hurled himself around the stage and eventually dove under her dress was rather disconcerting.

Definitely one of the love-it-or-hate-it performances of the night belonged to the adorable Simone, her entry How Will I Know which I can best describe as a “wannabe Disney princess fantasy song” was performed very well and while it lost out to the eventual winner in the first battle, I personally like to think it could have been second place. Very strong vocally and presented with total charm. I hope to see Simone back in DMGP next year with an even stronger song!

My ‘Diamond in the Rough’ for this national final came from the MariaMatilde Band. Their catchy pop entry Panik! Was one of the two Danish language entries this year, and while it wasn’t performed exceptionally, I still found the blend of pop elements with electro inspired sounds highly enjoyable and would have been happy for this to represent Denmark, it’s about time they sent something up tempo and in Danish!

Denmark would of course go on to claim its first top five position since 2001 thanks to the oddly familiar In a Moment Like This sung by Chanée and N’Evergreen, a song which had twice been rejected from the Swedish national finals due to not being high enough in quality. I bet the Swedes are kicking themselves now!

Feel free to leave your opinion below! Particularly if you liked one of the songs I didn’t mention, leave your own review!
