This year Albania is sending Rona Nishliu with “Suus” (from Latin: Personal) to the 57th Eurovision Song Contest which will be held in Azerbaijani’s capital Baku, in 2012.
After Rona’s victory at the 50th Festivali i Këngës, her winning entry “Suus” began to be debated and discussed online. On Youtube, the rating bar on the Albanian video show the likes and the dislikes are almost the same, therefore suggesting that the Albanian people and Eurovision fans have differing opinions on the song. Based on the viewer’s opinions, it seems the reviews of the songs has two different sides -- the good side and the bad side. This is why many fans have different thoughts on the song. It seems, one of the main reasons that the people ‘do not like’ the song is because of her screaming. While the reason that some people ‘like’ the song is because of her stunning voice. The next popular discussion is her country of origin. Rona is the first artist from Kosovo to perform on the Eurovision Song Contest stage and there has been some negative reactions due to the political situation between Kosovo and fans from various European countries who do not recognise Kosovo. Should it matter where the artist comes from? At the end of the day, no matter where the artist is from, the song would be no different.
During some interviews with professional musicians, Rona’s song was said to be the perfect song for the Eurovision Song Contest. Based on the reviews, the song was said to be unique and exactly what Eurovision needs. On the other hand, many Eurovision fans have a total different opinion. If we take some examples from past Eurovisons songs, there are several songs that could be compared to the unique style of “Suus”. For example, last year’s Lithuanian entry in Dusseldorf wasn’t branded the ‘perfect song for the public’, but still the song ended-up fifth in the semifinal, making it to the finals due to it’s on stage appeal and stunning vocals. The song ranked eleventh from the public vote and first from the jury points therefore, ranking the song an average of fifth.
It hasn’t been announced yet by Rona if the song will be staying in the mother language or if it will be changed into English. This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will be held in May and it’s up to the jury and public to decide the position for “Suus”.
