Born in Barcelona, Sergi Albert is one of the 12 artists due to perform next friday in the second show in the Spanish Preselection. ESCDaily talks to him about music, musicals and his hopes for Destino Eurovisión.

ESCDaily: You are one of the finalists with a better curriculum. Tell us a little about yourself.

PhotobucketSergi: Since I was a kid I always liked singing and playacting, but my parents thought I wouldn’t make a living of that, so I did Tourism and worked for several years in the Tourism-Bus in Barcelona. But the same day they fired me for singing in the bus, my sister saw a TV ad for a reality show called Estudio de Actores. And that’s were my musical career began.

ED: And how come you decided to take part in the auditions for Eurovision?

Sergi: These last few years I knew about the preselection and I wanted to take part on it, but I didn’t have my own song to participate, so this year were they choose singers and songs separately, I thought making available my voice to the audience might be a unique experience.

ED: You’ve been in several musicals, like Daniel Diges. What do you think of his victory?

Sergi: Yes, many of them are very well-known outside Spain: Into the Woods, Jesus Christ Superstar, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Beauty and the Beast … I think several of them have been even in Australia! (laughs) I’ve learned a lot with each of them and I got more security on stage… Nerves can play you a trick on stage.
What Daniel did was worthy of praise, and I say this because only someone with a much experience can overcome the situation he had on stage. The calm and concentration he kept all the time was a lesson for all of us who work on stage.

PhotobucketED: What music do you usually listen to? What do you listen to the most lately?

Sergi: (Laughs) I’m very particular with music, I especially listen to many musicals, and if we talk about singers, I really like Josh Groban, Michael Bubble and Robbie Williams.

ED: Do you watch Eurovision? Is there any song or performance that you liked in particular?

Sergi: I’ve been watching every time I could, when I wasn’t acting. What I like the most is the evolution of the festival itself in recent years, especially in the wake of Operación Triunfo. That year (2002) people got excited again about it, something that was lost since the unforgetable Sergio Dalma entry.
I personally like last year’s Didrik entry (Norway), and I want to state here that when I sang it in the auditions it was a total mess, I was recovering from an operation and I almost couldn’t hear the music!

ED: Any projects or future plans you can tell us about?

Sergi: Talking about these things brings bad luck, but surely you’ll see me soon in a tv series, a movie or a new musical.

ED: To finish, some words to the readers of escdaily.com and the eurofans?

Sergi: The good thing of all this is that music language is international, and therefore I hope you continue enjoying music, the singers, the costumes and the staging, as something extraordinary! I wish we could bring together so many countries for other matters…
Congratulations to everybody and I hope to see you soon!!!

Thank you very much!!!
