ESCDaily.com caught up with Icelandic singer Magni Ásgeirsson, who has a song in the upcoming Icelandic National Selection, Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2012. Last year, Magni took part in the National final of Iceland with the song Ég trúi á betra líf reaching the top three in the results.
You can read the full interview below:
ED: You are a well known singer in Iceland and you have competed in Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins a few times, how has that been for you?
Magni: The contest has always been a lot of fun – for me it´s kinda like meeting good friends for coffee – only with some singing now and then.
ED: Why did you decide to take part in Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2012 ?
M: I don´t really know – I wasn´t going to, but the song that Sveinn sent me just stuck in my head so I took a leap of faith.
ED: Can you tell us something about your song and the lyrics ? Does the lyrics have some meaning or message to the listener?
M: The song is a dramatic power ballad per exelance and the lyrics fit that description as well. It´s about loss, to miss someone, with a hint of hope in there somewhere.
The lyrics have different meaning to everyone in our group and hopefully the listeners can relate to it as well.
ED: Do you think you will take part in Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins again ?
M: Never say never, to me it´s about singing and having fun, so it´s about singing good songs, not the contest.
ED: Are you a Eurovision fan ? Do you have a favorite Eurovision song ?
M: Everyone have favorites, i´m not a “fan” but I like the contest and it´s part in the music scene. My favorite is propably Gleðibankinn.
ED: How was the experience on Rock Star Supernova and what did you learn performance wise from the show? Did it prepare you for a huge audience? Is Eurovision the next big show you’d like to take part in?
M: Rock star was a three month long contest that was going on 24/7 so everything else seems like a piece of cake after that
- I learnt more about performing in those three months then I´ll ever know…

ED: You got the nickname ,,The Iceman “ on the show, do your fans still call you that ?
M: Hehe -every now and then, Magni – does still seem to work better…
ED: You have been in a band in Iceland for many years called ,, Á Móti Sól “, what kind of music have you been playing ?
M: We started as a Ska-band, then a pop-band and now I think we just play what ever we want
ED: Is it a dream of yours to play in a rock band and sing songs like you were singing in Rockstar Supernova ? With your band ,, Á Móti Sól “ Or do you prefer to be a solo artist?
M: I think I´ve lived all the dreams I ever had regarding music, I do it for a living and that’s´more then I ever dreamed of , I ust like playing with different bands, different people
ED: You recently hand another child, congratulations, how is life with two kids? Is life much different after you became a dad ?
M: Life is beautiful
-- everything is better being a dad – It puts things in perspective, the big picture if you like. Things like winning contest seem futile, but giving every try your best to make an example for your kids becomes important, so hopefully you grow and become better at what you do.
ED: Finally , do you have any message for the ESCDaily readers ?
M:Enjoy life and hug the people you love – a lot
ED: Good luck and we hope to see you in Baku!
We wish the best of luck to Magni Ásgeirsson for Saturday and the third semi-final in Iceland! You can listen to his entry Hugarró, below;
