Interview: Softengine wants to make Finland proud

This year Finland will be represented by the Finnish band, Softengine who will perform “Something Better” in Copenhagen this year. ESC Daily got an opportunity to have questions answered by the band about their previous & current experiences with music, Eurovision & more.

1. How was the band ‘Softengine’ formed?

Three years ago, Topi (lead singer) and our friend decided to form an indie band. We asked fellow musicians to join us and went to my grandparents’ cottage to create a mutual sound. After diligent songwriting, practising and gigging, the band found its present line-up in the summer of 2013.

The name ‘Softengine’ comes from the fact that we think about things a lot, maybe even too much, and we wanted that to be showcased in the name of the band in some way. The word ”engine” stands for how we think too much and ”soft” for the gentle, aimless and philosophical nature of these considerations, overall becoming our band name.

2. How does it feel to represent Finland in Eurovision 2014?

It’s quite a heavy responsibility. We have to do our job well, so that Finland can be proud of us.

3. Have you watched Eurovision in previous years?

For many of us the Eurovision Song Contest has been a family event. The whole family has watched it together almost every year. Our own Eurovision favourite is Loreen’s ”Euphoria”.

4. What do you hope to achieve from the Eurovision Song Contest?

It will surely be a unique experience. We hope to at least get a lot of new listeners from abroad.

5. What is the message to your song: ”Something Better”?

The song is about an old man who reminisces about his life from childhood to the present day. He has always been dissatisfied with his life as it seems that he hasn’t achieved anything or done anything out of the ordinary. In his old days, his wife then dies and that makes him realise that what ‘they’ had was ”something better” than anything that he could have accomplished and that he should have always cherished the moment. Thats the message we wish to spread around the world.

6. Can you reveal any performance plans for Eurovision in Copenhagen?

We’ll do something different than the rest. We will play an energetic show and nothing too planned or theatrical. We just go and play a three-minute gig at full blast.

7. Finally, do you have a message for your fans & readers at ESCDaily.com?

Vote for us if you want a different kind of Eurovision winner. We would also like you to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Spotify. We value every fan!
