Tonight in Sweden, the Second Chance round of Melodifestivalen 2012 will be held in Nyköping. A total of eight acts will compete in four separate duels. The winners of duel one and two will face off for one spot in the Melodifestivalen final, plus the winners of duel three and four will face off for a spot in the final.
Duel 1
Dynazty – Land of broken dreams
The vocals are strong again from the lead singer like last weeks semi final and the staging is what you would expect from these Swedish long haired rockers again, so nothing has changed. The cliches from a rock band are still all present.
The groups performance this week appears to be more together and very confident. This song is growing on me and the key change tops it off. I bet this song sounds amazing in the arena tonight.
Top Cats – Baby Doll
This is my favorite entry in this duel. The rockabilly band Top Cats performs Baby Doll in fighting spirit. It must be something in the atmosphere tonight but this band also is performing better than their semi final and vocals are very confident. A happy up-tempo retro song which is sure to have u humming along by the end of the song. This rockabilly is popular in Sweden but then again so is rock music so this duel can go either way.
Through to next round: Top Cats
Duel 2
Andreas Johnson – Lovelight
‘Lovelight’ is a typical Andreas Johnson song. The song is catchy especially the “la la la” bit but I don’t think after one listen you will be hooked and this is why it has ended up in the second chance round. Like its semi final I think this could blend into the background tonight, especially when he is up against Timoteij. Lovelight reminds me of something that Mika may sing. Andreas’ fan base in Sweden may pull him through tonight but i doubt it.
Timoteij – Stormande hav
Timoteij were surprise winners of the Gothenburg heat, back in 2010. The young ethno-pop girlband are back again two years later with a quite similar entry. This is the fan favorite entry of the night and will be a shock to everyone if the girls done qualify to globen after that performance in which their vocals had improved greatly from semi final 2 and they seemed more comfortable on stage.
Through to the next round: Timoteij
Duel 3
Thorsten Flinck & Revolutionsorkestern – Jag reser mig igen
I didn’t know what to say about this entry in semi final 1 and i still don’t in andra chansen. I find the song dull and boring and Thorsten Flincks voice is not very easy on the ears.
I will admit the song is very progressive and after a few listens maybe it could become likable, It has a key change to lift the song as it was going nowhere. I’m hoping Lotta & Christer beat him in this duel.
Lotta Engberg & Christer Sjögren – Don’t let me down
The song is all very feelgood and cheesy. Visually the song is boring on stage and as far as schlager it isn’t as strong as other songs this year. Over the week this song has grown on me, but that doesn’t mean i like it.
I still feel like i’m watching mum and dad singing together on karaoke but this week their vocals have improved. Their popularity could put them through but I don’t believe they will get to Globen.
Through to the next round: Thorsten Flinck & Revolutionsorkestern
Duel 4
Sean Banan – Sean den förste banan
This is the surprise fan favorite of the year. And over the past week it has gained alot of support.
This song does have a lot of good qualities in Eurovision song contest standards in terms of that it includes a very catchy chorus, a costume change, dance routine and the most important which is the famous key change.
All in all the song is a very enjoyable, uplifting novelty song which i don’t think will fade into the background of this duel.
Youngblood – Youngblood
This is a typical boy band song for Melodifestivalen song and this is not a bad thing. The anthem-ic chorus is very catchy and the “woah woah woah” bit will stick in your head. This is what I have called ‘Manboy 2.0′ for obvious reasons or as Danny Saucedo has recently tweeted “Manblood, Manblood”
In terms of Eurovision standards this song ticks all the boxes, it has a dance routine, there is a key change and it is infectious.
The live vocals tonight are much stronger than they were in semi final 3 and they seem more confident again like the other artists in tonights andra chansen.
Through to the next round: Sean Banan
