Austria: Udo Jürgens passed away at age 80

Austrian broadcaster ORF has confirmed the sad news that former Eurovision-winner Udo Jürgens has passed away at the age of 80. The singer of the winning entry “Merci Cherie” in 1966 died because of a heart attack during a walk outside.

Jürgens also took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 and 1965, before winning the contest in Luxembourg ’66. In 1964 he came sixth with “Warum nur warum?” and in 1965 he finished in fourth place with the song “Sag ihr, ich lass sie grüßen”

Udo Jürgens was the only Austrian winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, until Conchita Wurst was victorious earlier this year in Copenhagen. You can rewatch the 1966-winning song here:
