Austria are to return to Eurovision after a three year absence, reports Der Standard. Broadcaster ORF’s programe director, Wolfgang Lorenz, confirmed that Austria will take part again on Tuesday, just under two months since the broadcaster hinted that it may return after neighbours Germany won in Oslo.
The selection procedure for Austria is as yet unclear, however speculation suggests that they may well follow the ARD lead and organise a casting show, or even use the existing show “Helden von Morgen”, which starts in October. ORF selected their 2007 entry internally, with their last open national final being in 2005.
Austria withdrew from the Song Contest in 2007, citing political voting and the fact that it was no longer a song contest, however the re-introcution of juries- coupled with Lena’s win- put added pressure on ORF to re-consider.
