Baku will construct a purpose-built venue especially for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, local media reports in Azerbaijan are today suggesting. According to the proposals, a venue is planned to be built near ‘National Flag Square’- the world’s largest flag pole.
Baku lacks a venue big enough for modern Eurovision size. The Haydar Aliyev Sports Complex, where the 2008 national final was held, could only seat up to 4,000 people when you take into consideration the stage and production areas. According to anspress.com, the new building would have a capacity of 20,000, and would be completed by the start of May next year.
Designs may well already be in place for a new venue, as Baku was bidding for the 2016 Olympics, and is expected to submit a further application in either 2020 or 2024.
