Cyprus: Hovig, Minus One & Co. ready for the final

Tonight, the Cypriot semi-final was broadcast on the national broadcaster RIK Sat. The jury selected the 6 finalists who will fight for the Cypriot ticket to Vienna in the big final on 1st February.

The jury of the “Eurovision Song Project” is comprised of former Cypriot representatives, Elena Patroklou (1991), Alex Panayi (1995 and 2000) and Despina Olympiou (2013), and Tasos Trifonos. Just like last week they were joined by Greek producer and composer Dimitris Kontopoulos (Ukraine 2008, Greece 2009, Belarus 2012, Azerbaijan 2013, Russia 2014) and the Swedish Head of Delegation, Christer Björkman.

During the semi-final each act had to pass through several phases: singing a piano version of their favourite Eurovision songs and vocal coaching with the judges Elena Patroklou and Alex Panayi, interview coaching with Björkman and Tasos Trifonos and propositions concerning motivation and body language from Despina Olympiou and Dimitris Kontopoulos. In the end, they had to perform their own songs of course.

After weeks of rather bland, monotonous and old-fashioned shows clearly favouring established artists and participants of various Greek talent shows the Mediterranean island finally knows its finalists. Cyprus is ready for its grand final next week, which can only get better and more exciting than the past shows. The televoting has started immediately after the show tonight and will end next week during the national final.

The 6 finalists are:

1. Minus One – Shine
2. Nearchos Evangelou and Charis Savva – Delia den agapo
3. Hovig – Stone in a river
4. Doody – Magic
5. Panagiotis Koufogiannis – Without your love
6. Giannis Karagiannis – One thing I should have done

  1. Minus One with Shine will easily win this one. Nice and dynamic change from the usual boring songs Cyprus has been sending for the last 8 years. This one has all the potential to hit a top place in Austria. The rest of the songs in my opinion are not at all fit to get any good position and will surely not make it to the Vienna finals.
