Interview: Sebalter – from Courtroom to Copenhagen

Switzerland decided to send Sebalter to Copenhagen with the song “Hunter of Stars”. We got in contact with Sebalter to discuss his musical past, present & future as Eurovision 2014 comes nearer.

1. Can you tell us a bit about Sebalter & what you had done previously with music before Eurovision?

Sebalter stands for “the alter ego of Sebastiano”, so as to stress the gap between the daily life as a lawyer in the Italian part of Switzerland, and the life on stage, on which a different part of me stands out, a part that struggles to come out during the daily life.

Music is my passion since I was a child. I started to play the violin by the age of 6. I played classical music for many years, then I shifted to rock music (playing both electric bass and guitar) until I discovered the Irish folk music, which I fell in love with. It was last summer, when I decided to participate at the ESC this year.

2. How does it feel to be the Swiss representative for Eurovision 2014?

On one hand I feel positively overwhelmed and satisfied by a musical achievement I have been longing for long time. On the other hand there is a feeling of responsibility and serious commitment that is present: I am going to represent my country, which is very important.

3. What is your main goal to achieve during Copenhagen?

I want to give my very best on stage and to excite the audience. My goal is definitely the access to the European final.

4. What is the message you wish to send with “Hunter of Stars”?

Hunter of Stars has basically a main key of interpretation: There is always a clash between confidence and non-confidence in myself when it comes to flirt and love.

5. What are you most looking forward to, during your trip to Copenhagen?

Playing, playing, playing!

6. Can you reveal to us anything about your performance in Copenhagen this year (e.g. will it resemble your national final performance)?

I usually prefer to focus on the song and on my performance. Of course I will also add some extra visual hooks, and some choreographic elements. But I don’t want to exaggerate.

7. Finally, do you have a message for your fans & readers at ESCDaily.com?

Thank you very much for your support. I am looking forward to the ESC experience in Copenhagen!
