Italy: Review of the second night of Sanremo 2016

The second night of the Sanremo Festival 2016 gave us the next ten candidates in the Campioni section, who battle for the opportunity to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. We look back after each night with a review of the show.

Twenty artists will compete in the Campioni section. Should the winner decide not to accept the invitation for Stockholm, broadcaster RAI will pick another participant internal. Italian broadcaster RAI will showcase the 66st edition of the Sanremo Festival in these five days.

The second night of Wednesday got a impressive guest list again, including Eros Ramazzotti and Nicole Kidman. The next ten artists got on stage as well, but no one was eliminated yet. The results below will however be used for next Friday as well, when five of these ten candidates will leave the show. One of them will be saved a televote, leaving a total of sixteen artists for the final on Saturday.

Night 2 sanremo 2016

01. Dolcenera – Ora o mai più
Being one of the voices in The Voice of Italy, Dolcenera was one of the favourites to make it to the final on Saturday. She sang her ballad behind the piano beautiful, but from start slot one she could not manage to make enough impact to stay out of the danger zone. For now.

02. Clementino – Quando sono lontano
The second rap song of Sanremo 2016 also scored very well in the contest. Could 2016 be the change-over year for this contest with a long history? We have seen rappers do well before, but should one make it to the top in the Campioni section would be very unique. In the past the jury has always prevented that from happening.

03. Patty Pravo – Cieli immensi
Patty took part in Sanremo eleven (!) times before and knows what it takes. Her song bulds up really slow and I can not see this doing very well in the final on Saturday, which it looks to qualify for.

04. Valerio Scanu – Finalmente piove
The winner of the Big Artists Section in 2010 is back to Sanremo and he is doing it right again. A classy performance of a beautiful song, with a great build-up to a climax. This is one of the acts that could work at Eurovision as well.

05. Francesca Michielin – Nessun grado di seperazione
The former X-Factor Italia winner is dressed very chaste and not all her vocals were spot on during this slow pop song. It appears she will qualify for the final, where she will probably finish somewhere in the middle with this song.

06. Alessio Bernabei – Noi siamo infinito
This is the former lead singer of Dear Jack, the band who we have seen perform yesterday. It was the first uptempo song in a while, and Alessio did a good job. But in the end, he has been placed in the danger zone of elimination for Saturday.

07. Elio e le Storie Tese – Vincere l’odio
This is the runner-up of 1996 and it appears time stood still. A big applause for this colourful performance, singing about several famous Italian cities. This is the gimmick song of 2016 and especially the older generation is going to love this in the televote I think!

08. Neffa – Sogni e nostalgia
Another nostalgic song by Neffa, who has been performing since the eighties and had composed song for the likes of Marco Mengoni and Emma Marrone. He had a tough draw, coming after Elio e le Storie Tese. Also because of that, he failed to make enough impact.

09. Annalisa – Il diluvio universale
The impressive Annalisa takes us back to the present days. She ended up in fourth place last year, and can make it to the top-10 again this year with another slow ballad. Great emotional vocals, which overwing her static performance.

10. Zero Assoluto – Di me e di te
This band has taken part in Sanremo a couple of times before but never managed to make a lasting impression. In 2016 this is the case again. The song is not bad, but not special either. And the stage performance could have involved way more interaction with the camera. Zero Assoluto is in danger of leaving Sanremo on Friday.
