Italy is set to return to the Eurovision Song Contest after a fourteen year absence, it has today been revealed. An article of the official Eurovision website, eurovision.tv, today confirmed that broadcaster RAI has applied to re-join the contest.
RAI withdrew after 1997 citing the fact that it was no long a song competition. In 2008 San Marino made their one and only appearance in the contest with RAI’s backing as one of the major shareholders in the company.
Broadcasters may still withdraw without facing a fine before the late-December deadline, so at this stage all applications are still prvisionary. However, rumours concering the participation of Italy have been circulation since the late summer, when it was revealed that the winner of an idol show may go on to represent them in Dusseldorf.
