Latvia: Supernova will allow foreign composers

After their last place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, Latvia will make some changes to their Supernova format, selecting the song and artist for 2018. The shows will take place in February.

The Latvian broadcaster will select 18 to 24 candidates to take part in the casting show. In three preliminary rounds, they will battle for two spots in the final each week. These finalists will be chosen through televote, web-vote, Spotify-streams and a jury.

Foreign composers allowed

Artists and composers can apply online until the 15th of October. Foreign composers are allowed to take part this year, as opposed to previous editions. However they can only do this if they team-up with one or more Latvian authors. LT writes on its website that “songs will be written on a special songwriting camp, just as it happens each year in Estonia for Eesti Laul.”

The chosen candidates will not be announced until the 24th of January. The next month, the broadcast of Supernova 2018 will happen.
