The third semifinal of Melodifestivalen takes place tonight with veteran Mariette and pop star Mohombi trying their luck once again.
This is the fourth time Mariette has been on Melodifestivalen. She starts the show as the first entry of the night. Also on the stage tonight is Mohombi. This is the second year in a row he has joined the contest. Last year he made it to the final with his song “Hello”.
Here’s the lineup for tonight:
- Mariette – Shout It Out
- Albin Johnsén – Livet börjar nu
- Drängarna – Piga och dräng
- Amanda Aasa – Late
- Anis don Demina – Vem är som oss
- Faith Kakembo – Crying Rivers
- Mohombi – Winners
The show starts at 20:00 CET on SVT’s website. Follow our liveblog below with ESCDaily editor Allie Lindo. Keep refreshing the page to see the latest updates.

21:30 – Wrapping it up
Mariette and Mohombi are through to the Melodifestivalen final. Drängarna and Anis don Demina will compete again in two weeks for their chance at the stage in Stockholm.
Of course, I’m disappointed Faith Kakembo didn’t make it through tonight but I’m sure this is not the last we’ll hear from her. Tonight was a mixed bag in terms of quality, but the Swedish public has made their decision. I’m sure tonight’s Winners are ready to Shout It Out backstage.
That’s all for tonight everyone! But join us next week for semifinal 4 live from Malmö.
21:24 – Direct to final is…
21:23 – Andra Chansen results
The first going to Andra Chansen is Drängarna and the second is Anis don Demina.
21:15 – First to the final is…
21:03 – Vi har ett resultat
The first two to be eliminated tonight are Albin Johnsén and Amanda Aasa.
20:56 – Let’s review!
There’s no way to sugarcoat this. Tonight was a mixed bag with more bad than good. I think the women brought us the best vocal performances of the night.
Faith Kakembo’s voice is a revelation. Even if she doesn’t make it through to the final or AC tonight (which would be SHOCKING to me), I hope she comes back next year, perhaps with a song that can really do justice to her beautiful voice.
Mohombi was also a decent entry tonight, but his song, lyrics, and performance didn’t feel totally integrated. There was something that just didn’t seem to come together for tonight’s performance.
I’m officially nominating Albin Johnsén for the worst performance of Melodifestivalen 2020. That’s all I have to say about that.
20:52 – Mohombi – Winners
This song sounds like it was written to be the World Cup song or for some other sporting event. That’s not a bad thing. I still dance to Shakira’s song from the South African World Cup.
The lyrics of this song confuse me and each line feels a bit disconnected from the next one. I’m not sure how I feel about this song. It wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t really feel like a Eurovision song.
In any case, that’s the last song for the night!
20:45 – Faith Kakembo – Crying Rivers
We have been SAVED with a little bit of Faith tonight. My goodness, what a voice. I actually think this song is under-using her voice. It’s clear Faith is capable of some truly powerful vocals.
She has a couple of flat moments but nothing too major. I’m crying rivers but only because we finally have another song and vocal combination that is worthy of a vote through to the final tonight.
The song could do with a little bit more energy but still a solid entry.
20:38 – Anis don Demina – Vem är som oss
I’m really enjoying that so many songs tonight are in Swedish, even if the vocals have been not so great.
However, the beat of this sounds a LOT like Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us. I’m worried there could be copyright infringement in progress on SVT right now.
This is a pretty fun song but honestly, the backup singers are carrying most of the burden here. The best parts of this song are the parts sung mostly by the backups.
20:30 – Amanda Aasa – Late
She can actually sing. That’s already a step up for tonight. So far it is the women of Melfest that have been carrying the show tonight.
This is a pretty chilled out pop song. Again another that is sure to get radio play, particularly in the summer. Amanda has been one of the highlights of the night so far. Solid song, solid performance and good energy on stage.
20:28 – Drängarna – Piga och dräng
A quick shoutout to Susanna who has just asked me, “Are we watching the right program?” Indeed, Susanna, I am equally confused.
It seems the hosts little Riverdance performance was actually a sneak preview of a Celtic rock-ish infused performance of….who knows at this point.
I admit this song is kinda fun to listen to in parts but…I want to ask those backup dancers how much they got paid to dance along to this.
But at least the singing isn’t offkey?
20:20 – Albin Johnsén – Livet börjar nu
Oh Albin I’m so sorry but no. This sing-talking thing is not working for you. In fact it just ends up sounding very off-key. If life starts now then perhaps so should the actual singing?
If this song makes it to even Andra Chansen, I’ll have some serious questions for the Swedish people.
20:15 – Mariette – Shout It Out
She’s back for the fourth time with a song co-written by the prolific writer Thomas G:sson.
This is by far one of the strongest vocal performances of the year so far. Mariette really shows how to deliver vocally on stage and I will always be grateful to her for that.
One of the things I love about Mariette has nothing to do with her singing. She brings a kind of raw energy to the stage that’s rather refreshing. The kind of energy that allows me to forgive her for her sometimes awkward dancing.
The song itself is pretty solid but perhaps not as memorable as her previous entries in this competition.
20:08 – Nu kör vi!
And it’s time to get to the core of the show. The magic words are spoken and it’s time to get to it.
Our hosts remind the audience of the various ways they can vote for their favorites tonight. The choices are by phone, text or through the app.
20:04 – Let’s go!
And we’re live from Luleå! Don’t forget to refresh this page to get the latest updates from Sweden.
Of course, our hosts kick things off with a song and dance number together. Tonight’s host entertainment isn’t so bad actually. I still have high hopes that this won’t be the highlight of tonight’s show. After all, Mariette is coming up first!
Oh look even some brief Riverdancing. Interesting.
19:45 – Getting ready
Tonight is the third round of Melodifestivalen and it means another batch of veterans will be taking the stage. Mariette has been a fan favorite for some years now and there are high hopes for her performance tonight.
Eyes are also on Mohombi as the internationally-known star looks to make it all the way to Rotterdam this year. Tonight’s lineup also has a serious throwback in Drängarna. Tonight’s 3rd act is a well-known dansband group here in Sweden, but this is the first time they are trying their luck in Mello.
Stay tuned as we learn the next two acts heading to the Stockholm final, and who will have a second chance in two weeks.
