Sweden: Melodifestivalen gets a new record

The registration period for Melodifestivalen 2011 has finished today. New records in the amount of received songs have been made – 3852 songs for Melodifestivalen 2011 (424 of those for the Webjoker). That’s 998 songs more than last year, or 412 songs more than in 2009, which was the previous record (3440 songs).

The Webjoker voting will start on October 11th, on Melodifestivalen’s official website – http://www.svt.se/melodifestivalen . Last year, 246 songs were entered for this stage of the contest, and 1 song was chosen to take part in Melodifestivalen semi final. This year, the amount of songs is almost doubled – 424 songs! And 2 of those songs will make it to one of the Melodifestivalen semi finals. 5 songs chosen through the online voting will qualify for the special tv show in November, where the two lucky winners will be chosen by televoting.

The special jury has got a total of 3428 songs to listen to, and to choose the best 15 to make it to Melodifestivalen.

Besides the two Webjoker winners, and the 15 songs chosen by an “elimination jury”, 15 wildcards will be chosen for the semi finals as well.
