Next Up: 2021 – Poland

Poland has not been in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest since 2017. With the young rising star Alicja they hoped to make it to the final in Rotterdam. Will TVP stick with her in 2021?

In today’s episode we look at Poland in 2021. For a full review of their potential entry for 2020, check out this article on our partner website Eurovision Union. Check out our thoughts for next year below.

Key takeaways: Impressive vocals and young appealing appearance

The original Polish song has beautiful instrumentation, and the orchestral sound really gives this the James Bond vibes. We know from the past that this can work at Eurovision. Either way, Alicja’s voice also lends itself really well to this style of ballad, as she has a deeper tone of voice. The verses of the song have an understated beauty, while towards the end, we get to hear her really unleash those big notes. Had she pulled those off in the live performance, it would have been an impressive moment.

How to proceed with Alicja in Eurovision 2021?

Poland has a young and very skilled artist, who won The Voice of Poland. And we can hear why. Alicja wants to go to Eurovision in 2021, but TVP has yet to confirm if she will get that chance. To be honest, I don’t see a reason why they would not. With such a good singer, it is no problem to find another suitable song for her, to bring Poland back in the Eurovision final again.

I doubt whether the composition in 2020 was contemporary enough to let it be a top-10 result in the final. There is some work to be done to make Alicja stand out even more with another song in 2021.

Exploring other options

There was a small and modest group of artists in the running for 2020. And even though Albert Cerny from Lake Malawi also took part, Alicja was the best by a landslide. That being said, Poland is a big country. There is a lot of talent in the music industry in the scene, and should a bigger more established name be available, I would understand if TVP switches from a talent to an experienced artist.

This was supposed to be Poland’s Eurovision 2020 entry
