The last three winners of Eurovision only got to the contest, after losing in a previous national final first. This year, many artists with a similar track record will try to follow in their footsteps. In this episode we highlight Anja Nissen from Australia.
Because yes, Anja Nissen ís from Australia. But, as you might know, she will take part at Eurovision 2017 on behalf of Denmark. It was a rusty road towards the big Eurovision stage for the former winner of The Voice Australia.
Nissen was born near Sydney, New South Wales in Australia to Danish-born parents. Her mother and father emigrated from Denmark to Australia when they were 11 and 22 years old, respectively. In 2014, Nissen was a contestant on the third series of The Voice Australia. She was a member of Team will.i.am, and went on to win the competition. |
In January 2016, Nissen was confirmed to be taking part in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2016, Denmark’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, with the song “Never Alone”. The song was co-written by Danish Eurovision winner Emmelie de Forest.
Anja was among the three superfinalists of the show in Denmark. But in the end, the boyband Lighthouse X was selected as the winner solely by a public vote.

The following year, she returned to the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with the song “Where I Am”, which was written by Nissen herself, along with Angel Tupai and Michael D’Arcy. Nissen went on to win, getting 64% of the final vote, and will now represent Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017.
Anja wrote the music and lyrics of ‘Where I Am’ together with Michael D’Arcy and Angel Tupai. After missing out last year, it feels like a dream coming true for her to go the Eurovision Song Contest after all: “Eurovision is so important to me because it has been a dream of mine since I was only 11 years old. I have always been longing for Denmark and wanting to find a deeper connection to my other homeland.”
