The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will be held in the city of Rotterdam in The Netherlands. The EBU and Dutch host broadcaster AvroTros confirmed the selection on their official channels. Dates for the shows are Tuesday 12, Thursday 14 and Saturday 16 May 2020.

The Eurovision venue will be Ahoy. Built in 1970, the arena’s design, which took inspiration from Rotterdam’s port and shipping industry, won various national and international awards.

Ahoy has a show venue with congress halls directly next to it, in the same building. The EBU could use these halls not only for a press center, but also for delegation spaces & rooms for the crew to work in. When it comes to working at the contest, for crew and journalists, Ahoy has an ideal package. It also hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest and MTV Europe Awards in the past.

The city of Rotterdam, and other big cities directly attached to it, also offer plenty of hotels and accommodations to stay for the delegations and journalists. It is within a 40 minute drive from the main airport Schiphol. And Rotterdam even has its own airport Rotterdam-The Hague, which connects it to several other European countries.

“Arguably the best option”

Earlier in the pre-season, ESCDaily already wrote that the second city of The Netherlands, Rotterdam, arguably has the best venue to offer.

At least, the chief of Ahoy says so herself. A group of Event Managers in The Netherlands did some research and also concluded: Rotterdam is the best option. Ahoy cleared its entire schedule for the months of April & May before the bidding process even started, emphasizing they are ready to host Eurovision.

11.000 – 12.000 people can enter the Ahoy Arena for Eurovision. An important selection criterium to choose Ahoy over MECC Maastricht was the height of the venue. In Ahoy, the maximum height of the arena is 30 meters (MECC: 17,88 meter).

Dates for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020

Due to clashes with football (either Champions League, Europa League or the German cup final on the 23rd of May) the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will take place on the 12th, 14th and 16th of May 2020. Rehearsals on the 5th of May may be impossible in The Netherlands due to Liberation Day.
