Stockholm 2016: 43 countries including Bulgaria and Croatia take part

The Eurovision Song Contest will have 43 participating countries in 2016. The EBU confirmed today that, after the return of Bosnia & Herzegovina earlier this week, also Bulgaria and Croatia will return to the contest.

The number 43 is an equaling of the record set in 2008 and 2011. ESC Daily’s participation expert Dennis van Eersel had previously speculated on a record number of countries in THIS editorial.

Earlier this week, it was assumed that the contest would have 41 participants, of which the last one was still unknown. When Bosnia & Herzegovina confirmed its return to the contest, the mistery appeared to be solved, but later Bulgaria also hinted on their official Twitter on a possible return, and Croatia had still not made any public announcement. As it turns out, they too will join the party in Stockholm.

“We have put a lot of effort into bringing together as many countries as possible and this number reflects that,” states Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor for the EBU. These efforts resulted in the comeback of not only Bulgaria, Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, but also Ukraine, who had announced their comeback earlier. Both Bosnia & Herzegovina and Ukraine have an outstanding 100% qualification record in the semi finals of Eurovision.
