What happened today in Rotterdam: Day Four

Every evening, we summarize the events that occurred in Rotterdam. Day four completed the first round of rehearsals for the countries in the second semi final of Eurovision 2021 took the stage. And we were happy to see many of them gave a good performance.

In What Happened Today we close off the day with an overview of the most important facts and videos. Have you been working all day? Or you did not have time to follow the rehearsals? Everything you may have missed – you can catch up every night in this article.

EBU says pre-recorded backing vocals could remain at Eurovision

Backing vocals on tape could remain in the Eurovision Song Contest, even in a post-pandemic world. It’s a big deal for many Eurovision fans. We spoke to Executive Supervisor for the EBU Martin Österdahl and he says: “We will evaluate this after the contest and decide what is the best way forward.”

Bulgaria and Switzerland still in the running

Two contenders for the victory in Rotterdam, Victoria from Bulgaria and Gjon’s Tears for Switzerland, both had their first rehearsal this Tuesday. Both ballads had a good first runthrough for their songs. This what we wrote in our liveblog throughout the day. Switzerland gives a “Wow” moment in a good way. A massive white, modernist polygon structure is the base for the performance with Gjon’s Tears incorporating artistic hand and body gestures throughout.

Victoria from Bulgaria is on stage and she sits on what seems to be a mountain cliff-top surrounded by water. There is pouring sand on one side of the monument. She’s dressed in somewhat blue pyjamas but adds to the whole aesthetic. Vocally superb, even during the ending part with no music. Another great year for Bulgaria it seems.

Finland rocks in Rotterdam

The second semi final offers a diverse field of songs. From the ravesong from Latvia, the laid back music style of Portugal, to the noise and power of Finland’s Blind Channel. Especially that song ‘Dark Side’ is standing out from the pack in this semi final and seems to be a certain qualifier after their first rehearsal.
