Why Malta often changes its Eurovision song after the preselection

Emma Muscat won Malta ‘s Eurovision preselection with the song “Out of Sight”. However, she decided to change the song to “I am what I am” for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin. Malta often changes its song – but why?

“First of all: it is a part of our rules, that we can challenge the song. This is part of our Eurovision strategy,” says Malta ‘s Head of Delegation at the press conference. “We give importance to the artist. If you vote in the Maltese national final, you should know that choosing the right artist is our first concern.”

“After that, for their next step, we want the singer to feel comfortable with their song. We also encourage public feedback on the song after we have selected it.”
